Cistercian Publications has been producing books on the Christian monastic tradition for a quarter century. The Cistercian Fathers Series, which brings the insights of formative medieval Cistercian spiritual writers to readers of English, began with two works by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Thomas Merton’s The Climate of Monastic Prayer launched the Cistercian Studies Series, which went on to produce translations of ancient and medieval monastic texts, scholarly studies of the tradition, and explorations of the theology and spirituality influenced by monasticism; as well as reflective books drawing on and sharing the monastic experience. As this treasury of monastic literature in English has grown, Christians outside the cloister have increasingly turned to the lived experience of contemporary monks and nuns to slake a growing thirst for an authentic contemplative spirituality. The Monastic Wisdom series responds to this widespread interest in contemplative spirituality by making available contemporary insights born of long monastic experience. With this new series, Cistercian Publications hopes to make theologically-sound spiritual guidance available to those whose interests are contemporary rather than historical and to help those leading busy lives `in the world’ to inculcate into their lives the tine-proven monastic values of prayer, silence, reflection, community, and discipline. The General Editor of the Monastic Wisdom Series is Brother Patrick Hart, a monk of Gethsemani Abbey long associated with Thomas Merton and his literary heritage. Collaborating with him in selecting works for the series is an Advisory Board consisting of Kathleen Norris, Michael Casey OCSO, Terrence Kardong OSB, Lawrence S. Cunningham, Bonnie Thurston, and Miriam Pollard OCSO.
