The Feast of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth was introduced in the fifteenth century and gradually found its way on to the Cistercian Calendar, where the chants took on a distinctively cistercian 'accent.’ Most of its musical composition dates from the late 1400s, though the office as sung here represents a somewhat later stage of its development in the Order. This performance by the University of Iowa Cantores of cistercian chants for the Office of Vigils of the Visitation (31 May) was recorded in the Chapter Room of the Abbey of Our Lady of New Melleray in Iowa.
